A collaboration between members of the MIT Glass Lab, MIT Museum Studio, Media Lab, and Edgerton Center explores the stunning interplay of light and hand-blown glass. Featuring a projection system that magnifies the intricate structures within the glass—traces of its handmade creation—the installation transforms these microscopic details into an immersive, room-scale experience.

The team works on the heart of the Argus Installation, the optical system featuring handblown glass discs.

In the MIT tradition of interdisciplinary collaboration, Argus Installation engages the people and expertise of the MIT Glass Lab, MIT Museum Studio, Media Lab, and Edgerton Center. This project is all about human vision: multiple perspectives, the malleability of seeing, and seeing as a human creative act with responsibilities and learning potential.

At the center of the installation is an original optical system using a variation on Schlieren imaging and handmade glass optical discs. At the center of the room, a "seeing machine" with hundreds of "eyes" functions as a camera obscura in reverse.

Complex optical events inside the sculpture project through apertures into the surrounding environment, immersing viewers in articulations of light and color that shape their perceptions of the space.
