Wide Tim is a plump and joyful beaver character and an MIT-wide sensation created by Tianyuan (Margaret) Zheng, MIT '23, MEng '24. Aside from being MIT’s only eating and sleeping double major, Wide Tim is all for sharing joy and spreading love. Since his debut in 2021, Wide Tim has collaborated with 85+ MIT organizations, offices, and departments to create more than 200 illustrations advocating for wellness, the arts at MIT, and happiness all around. Wide Tim is so excited to be here and create even more joy with everyone through this collaborative mural!
Tianyuan “Margaret” Zheng (MIT ‘23, MEng ‘24) is an artist who has made a lasting joyful impact on the MIT community. She is best known as the creator of Wide Tim (@wide_tim), a plump and joyful beaver character known and beloved by the MIT community. Since February 2021, Zheng has created over 200 Wide Tim illustrations in collaboration with more than 85 MIT clubs, organizations, offices, and entities to advocate for community wellness and the arts. Featured on the MIT Class of 2028 poster and several institute events such as the MIT Campus Preview Weekend, her work with Wide Tim has been recognized with the 2023 Wiesner Student Art Award, MIT News, and MIT Technology Review.
In addition to her work with Wide Tim, Zheng has been a muralist, animator, and project organizer with Borderline Murals, an artist for Ring Committee 2023, an MIT Arts Scholar, and a lead counselor for the First-Year Arts Program. Outside the realm of visual arts, she has also explored a variety of artistic channels by acting in the MIT Shakespeare Ensemble, arranging and singing a cappella with Next Sing, playing the grand piano at MIT McCormick Hall (where she was a resident for 4 years and served as co-president), and writing her own music.
Margaret Zheng is currently based in Boston, MA, where she continues to explore her interests in mathematics and economics while also pursuing her artistic journey through Wide Tim and other projects.
MIT Open Space Programming organizes events and activities designed to engage and connect the Cambridge, MIT, and Kendall Square communities. They also work closely with MIT Admissions to manage the MIT Welcome Center.
